Tallest wel-come
statue of Lord Hanuman is located on the top of Kadri Hills at Kadri Manjunath
Temple; Mangalore (Mangaluru) city belongs to Dakshina Kannada district in the
Indian state of Karnataka.
Kadri Shree
Manjunatha Temple is situated just 4 kms away from the densely populated area
of Mangalore in a rural atmosphere. This old and ancient temple is surrounded
by a picturesque scene of natural beauty.
The temple
of Manjunatheshwara (aka Lord Shiva) on the Kadri Hills is one of the most popular
temples in Mangalore. It is said to be built during the 10th century. It was
converted to a complete stone structure during the 14th century. The idol of
Lord Manjunatha Swamy of the temple is called as oldest of the South Indian
Temples.
It is
believed that Parashuram (one of the Chiranjeevi of Hinduism) who was
living in Sahyadri, killed the kshathriyas who were cruel and donated the lands
to Kashyapa. He prayed to Lord Shiva for a place to live. Lord Shiva assured
Parashuram that if he performed a penance at Kadali kshethra (Suvarna Kadali
Van), Lord Shiva would reincarnate as Manjunatha.
As per
Shiva's orders Parashuram threw his axe into the sea and created a place for
his penance. Yielding to Parashuram's prayers Lord Shiva appeared to him as
Manjunatha along with Goddess Parvati and stayed at Kadri for the betterment of
the world.
